There are two Dimension Types in O3:

  • the Common Dimensions
  • the Date Dimensions

We use this distinction for two reasons. The Date Dimension is included in practically all analysis models, thus justifying the incorporation of special mechanisms for its treatment. Also, given its special characteristics, it is easier to manage as a separate dimension rather than incorporating it with the remaining dimensions.
Because of the distinction, when you add a new dimension, you choose to add a Date Dimension using Add Date or Insert Date, or to add a Common Dimension using Add Dimension or Insert Dimension.
To define a new dimension, you must be in the Design Tree at the Dimension branch or at a previously defined dimension node. You can add a new dimension using the Insert Date, Add Date, Insert Dimension, or Add Dimension commands available through the Toolbar, or the File option of the Menu Bar, or by right-clicking on the Dimension branch or a dimension node on the branch.

Adding a Dimension
Notes

  • When the user opens a cube generated from this model in the O3 Browser, the dimensions appear on the Dimension Bar in the same order as you define them in the model. The cube built presents the initial view setting the first dimension as X and the second as Series. Once you define a new dimension, you can create its hierarchy and associate the Data Sources fields used to build it. The procedure varies depending on the Dimension Type and the Construction Mode you declare for it.
